- Sign up for the lottery in the RPS 205 Welcome Center by March 2; and
- Attend a mandatory open house to decide if the program is the best educational fit for their child. (Families must attend an open house session to be included in the lottery.)
Kindergarten lottery for the Two-Way Language Immersion at Barbour: Two-Way Language Immersion (grades K-8) at Barbour provides students with the skills to read, write and speak in both English and Spanish. The program prepares students for the global market as dual-language learners. An education at Barbour provides a unique multicultural experience. In kindergarten and first grades, students receive 90% of their daily instruction in Spanish, and instructional time in English is increased by 10% in each subsequent grade. By fifth grade, time is evenly balanced between Spanish and English. The academic standards and curriculum align with traditional RPS 205 schools. The program promotes bilingualism, biliteracy and positive cross-culture attitudes and behaviors. Students must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2018.
Kindergarten lottery for the STEAM Academy at Haskell: STEAM features STEM, plus Arts. Housed at Haskell, the STEAM focus is new in 2017-18. This program provides integrated learning through Science and Technology, interpreted through Engineering and the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements. The program includes FOSS™ Full Option Science System of UC Berkeley, a curriculum with hands-on, deeper learning. Maker-spaces, arts and engineering will expand under the STEAM implementation plan. The student-driven learning environment fosters inquiry, problem-solving, innovation and growth mindset. Students who live in any RPS 205 attendance zone are welcome to complete an application. Students in first through fifth grades can apply at the Welcome Center because limited seats are available. Kindergarten students must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2018.
Pre-kindergarten lottery for Maria Montessori at Marsh: The Maria Montessori program follows the teaching of Dr. Maria Montessori, who developed a method of education using hands-on learning in a child-centered environment. Students are grouped in multi-age classrooms and encouraged to take responsibility for their own education. Montessori-trained teachers foster independence by supporting children as they move with purpose throughout the classroom selecting materials needed to carry out their day’s work. Older children model for younger children. Students remain with the same teacher for two-to-three years for a strong sense of community with self-directed learning. Students must be 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2018.
