Guilford High School students will officially open the Guilford Viking Credit Union today in the Guilford High School commons. The credit union will run in partnership with Rockford Bell Credit Union; the Guilford site will be Rockford Bell's third location.
The Guilford Viking Credit Union will be open to Guilford students and Rockford Public Schools staff. Rockford Bell employs 20 Guilford students from the Business Academy. Credit union concepts have been built into the pathway course concepts, and an employee from Rockford Bell Credit Union will be on site with students during each shift.
The Guilford Viking Credit Union will be open during fourth, fifth and sixth class periods; students will work during their lunch periods. This location will be open Monday through Friday on regular school days: 11 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and from 11:20 a.m. to 1:48 p.m. Thursdays.
Guilford students contributed to the furniture design and layout, naming the branch and designing the logo. "Operating the credit union provides students an opportunity to apply what they're learning in the classroom to a real-world setting that is connected to their Academy theme with support from business partners," said Bridget French, Executive Director of College & Career Readiness for RPS 205.
Rockford Bell Credit Union has invested in the site to provide funding for renovations and employee salaries. This project has been in the works for nearly five years. "Rockford Bell is pleased to enter into this historic partnership with Rockford Public Schools. We look forward to showing students that working in the financial sector can be a rewarding career path," said John Hansen, Rockford Bell Credit Union CEO. "RPS 205's academy structure is the perfect vehicle for a business like ours to nurture students' knowledge of money matters. We are proud to open a branch office in Guilford High School and challenge the rest of the business community to step up to offer students opportunities in other fields."
Media are invited to the grand opening and ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. today at Guilford High School. Please use the main entrance and check in at the security desk with a photo ID.
