Rockford School Board member Laura Powers submitted her resignation from the board on Tuesday, effective immediately. Powers has represented Subdistrict G since she was first elected in 2011. She was reelected in 2013.
“I am grateful for the four years Mrs. Powers served on the Board and for the commitment she made to improving public education in our community,” said Board President Ken Scrivano.
According to School Board policy, the board has 45 days to publicize the vacancy, interview applicants in closed session and vote in open session to fill the vacancy. The replacement candidate will complete Powers’ term, which runs through April 2017.
The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 11.
Interviews will be conducted during a special School Board meeting Sept. 16
, and an appointment will be made at the Sept. 22 School Board meeting.
If the board does not find a candidate, Regional Superintendent Lori Fanello will have an additional 30 days to find a replacement.

Applicants must also be at least 18 years old, reside in Subdistrict G and be a registered voter. Applicants must also be a resident of the State of Illinois and Rockford Public Schools for one year immediately preceding the date of appointment.
