 Aug. 21 Back-to-School Update

 8/21/2020

RPS 205 families and staff,

My administrative team and I have been working with the Rockford Education Association to finalize our elementary plan for our families who chose in-person instruction. We understand the confusion and concern specifically around Wednesdays.

In our updated plan, Wednesdays will be early dismissal days for ALL elementary students who chose in-person instruction, instead of Wednesday attendance potentially fluctuating from week to week. That means all K-5 students who chose in-person instruction will participate in what we're calling What I Need Wednesdays, or WIN Wednesdays, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 23. Wednesdays will focus on intervention for students who need support, and additional rigor for students who are excelling.

Here's what elementary families can expect in September:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 2, the first day of school: Only K-5 students with last names that begin with A-K will attend school for a full day of instruction. All K-5 students who chose remote-only instruction will participate in five hours of instruction and learning.
  • Thursday, Sept. 3: Only K-5 students with last names that begin with L-Z will attend school for a full day of instruction. All K-5 students who chose remote-only instruction will participate in five hours of instruction and learning.
  • Friday, Sept. 4: ALL elementary students who chose in-person instruction will attend a full day.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 9: ALL K-5 students –remote-only and in-person – will participate in a remote learning day. Students will not attend school in person. All K-5 students who chose remote-only instruction will participate in five hours of instruction and learning.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 16: ALL K-5 students –remote-only and in-person – will participate in a remote learning day. Students will not attend school in person.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 23: The shortened schedule will begin for ALL students, both remote and in-person. The elementary school day will start at 7:35 a.m. and dismiss at 11 a.m. Again, all students will participate in WIN Wednesdays.

Middle & high schools: On Wednesdays – starting with Sept. 2, the first day of school – ALL middle and high school students will follow remote learning plans. Secondary schools will also follow the WIN Wednesdays model starting Sept. 23 with a shortened remote learning day:

  • Middle school remote learning will start at 9:15 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.
  • High school remote learning will start at 8:20 a.m. and end at 12:20 p.m.

This updated Wednesday schedule does not include Early Childhood students. Students who attend Maria Montessori at Marsh – including 4-year-old students – should follow the elementary schedule for Wednesdays, which includes attendance and early dismissal days.

I hope this update provides more consistency and predictability for our elementary families. Please follow this link for a updated FAQs collected from Let's Talk! Please continue to share your questions via Let's Talk!, or contact your school's main office staff.
