The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released a list of scholarship winners this week, which includes Auburn High School senior Andrew Baxter. Baxter will receive a $2,500 scholarship and the distinction of being a National Merit Scholar. He was chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program. He plans to study engineering.
Four Auburn students were named semifinalists in September, then finalists in March for scholarships in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program: Andrew Baxter, Ellen Chidley, Logan Power and William Snedegar. All four students are in the Gifted Academy at Auburn.
National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the United States.
