Additions OK’d at Hillman, Marsh Elementary Schools

​The Rockford School Board tonight approved additions and renovation work at Marsh and Swan Hillman elementary schools, set to begin in June.

The 16,932-square foot addition and upgrades at Marsh are worth nearly $5.5 million. Schmeling Construction Company submitted the lowest responsible bid at $5,489,000. Marsh will house the Maria Montessori program in the 2016-17 school year. Upgrades include nine new classrooms and a cafeteria/kitchen addition, corridor and common area renovations, mechanical renovations and interior finishes. Construction is expected to be complete for the start of the 2016-17 school year. Five companies submitted bids:

  • ​Schmeling Construction Company: $5,489,000
  • Ringland-Johnson Construction: $5,648,000
  • Stenstrom General Contractor - Design/Build Group: $5,704,000
  • Rockford Structures Construction Company: $5,995,000
  • F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen & Associates LLC: $6,377,000
The total project budget is $5,113,559. The bid award amount of $5,489,000 is captured in the Fiscal 2016 budget and board-approved capital plan with $103,000 funded in the building contingency fund and $272,441 from program contingency.

The 12,448-square foot addition and upgrades at Hillman are worth nearly $3.6 million. Ringland-Johnson Inc. submitted the lowest responsible bid at $3,573,000. Upgrades include a new cafeteria and kitchen addition, office relocation and renovation, new entryway and security vestibule, and two new classrooms – one each for art and music. Construction is expected to be complete for the start of the 2016-17 school year. Five companies submitted bids:

The total project budget is $3,828,831; this project is under budget. The bid award amount of $3,573,000 is captured in the Fiscal 2016 budget and board-approved capital plan.

The School Board already approved a $5.2 million addition to West View Elementary School. Five elementary school additions are expected to break ground in June: West View, Marsh, Swan Hillman, Welsh and Whitehead. The projects are funded by the $139 million voter-approved bond referendum.​
