Helen Sanchez has worked at Whitehead Elementary School for six years. First she was a custodian. Three years later Ms. Sanchez became a paraprofessional. Now she is working toward completing her associate's degree at Rock Valley College.
She has been working toward her degree for the last six years, paying class-by-class along the way. With only 10 credit hours remaining, we as a staff agreed to surprise Ms. Sanchez with contributions to help her finish this summer – and continue working toward her dream of being a teacher. Staff members gave more than we hoped, and Ms. Sanchez will graduate this May! After finishing her associate's degree, Ms. Sanchez plans to finish her teaching degree through Rockford University or Northern Illinois University.
This whole idea was spearheaded by Whitehead music teacher Jill Vega, and the staff recently celebrated Ms. Sanchez and presented her with $1,500 to help her continue her educational journey. Whitehead Elementary School staff truly is one big family!
We anticipate this process will speed up in the coming days.
