 STEAM Academy

student holding magnifying glassThe STEAM Academy at Haskell is the newest K-5 special program and integrates science and technology, interpreted through engineering and the arts, all based in mathematical elements. Students from all over the district may apply.

As the ONLY Innovation School in RPS 205, students attend for 20 extra minutes daily.  Based on academic growth on state tests, the STEAM Academy at Haskell was designated a 'Commendable' school on the Illinois School report card, jumping two designations.

The program creates a student-driven learning environment which fosters inquiry, problem-solving, innovation and a growth mindset. During the 2017-2018 school year, students focused on a new, integrated science curriculum to keep them active and engaged. For the 2018-2019 school year, the Maker Space was developed and is now a weekly part of the curriculum!  Coding and Engineering activities were added in 2019.  The STEAM Academy is the only elementary school in the district to offer Project Lead the Way 'Launch', an Engineering and Coding curriculum.

Year four of the program, 2020-2021, further implements these exciting initiatives. Students attending the STEAM Academy are offered Band as an elective in grades 4 and 5 and have more weekly time with arts specialists to honor the 'A' in STEAM, and to support design thinking.

We welcome students from all over the district who are interested in a STEAM education. Students from any zone may fill out an interest form at the Welcome Center. Limited seats are still available, with wait lists at some grade levels.

Transportation and breakfast/lunch are offered to all students who attend STEAM CAMP.

A computerized, random lottery is run in late March for students who applied and whose parent/guardian attended an orientation.  Sibling priority is given to students living in the same home as students who are already enrolled in the program (pre-kindergarten through 4th grade).  Sibling preference does not apply to applicants for the upcoming year whose only sibling is currently enrolled in 5th grade.

A lottery waitlist is created and each student is assigned a number. The lottery waitlist is posted on the Welcome Center page of the district website.

Families interested in the STEAM Academy at Haskell after open application dates are closed may fill out an interest form at the Welcome Center. Interest forms are time stamped, and an interest list is maintained in this order.

When all lottery waitlist students have been placed the interest list is used to place students. Sibling preference or prior STEAM/STEM experience within a year, a mandatory orientation appointment at the school and interest form responses are considered when placing students. Sibling priority is given to students living in the same home as students who are already enrolled in the program (pre-kindergarten through 4th grade). Sibling preference does not apply to applicants for the upcoming year whose only sibling is currently enrolled in 5th grade.

Both the lottery waitlist and interest lists are maintained by the Welcome Center.
