Demolition at Nelson Elementary School started this week, and bricks from the school will be available to the public on Monday, Sept. 30. A limited number of bricks will be in a pile outside the construction fence, first come first served.
Closing Nelson Elementary School was part of board-approved facilities plan from 2014 that included several additions and building two schools. Under the plan, both Nelson and Kishwaukee elementary schools would close, and the student populations would consolidate into a new school.
Nelson Elementary School, 623 15th St., has been vacant since the end of the 2018-19 school year. Students in Nelson’s attendance zone now attend Constance Lane Elementary School, which opened this year.
