Academy Expo grows, more RPS students explore careers

9/16/2013

More than 5,000 Rockford Public School students will participate in the 2013 Academy Expo on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in the BMO Harris Bank Center. Students from Auburn, East, Guilford and Jefferson high schools, along with students from Roosevelt Community Education Center, will be involved. The event will run from 8:50 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event, designed by Alignment Rockford’s Career Awareness Committee, will help students select an academy and pathway in January 2014 based on personal interests. More than 140 career demonstrations, staffed by community businesses, agencies, and local colleges and universities, will provide authentic insights into the world of work. Participating local employers make this event highly relevant to high school students.

A 12:30 p.m. news conference will be held in the Comcast booth to announce the four winners of the 2013 Academy Expo’s ‘Best in Academy’ award, and the overall Academy award recognition. “These awards are meant to recognize the generous support of the community and, through some good-natured competition, improve the career awareness teaching and learning experience for all students,” said Laurie Preece, Executive Director of Alignment Rockford.

Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council members will emcee the news conference and will be available for questions after the awards are announced. Media access must be through the Chestnut Street entrance to the Dental Dimensions Club Lounge. Photo ID is required.

Superintendent Ehren Jarrett is excited about this year’s Academy Expo. “Businesses participating in the 2nd annual Academy Expo will be actively supporting the District’s goal of ensuring all students are college and career ready.  Exposing Rockford students to the wide array of career opportunities in the Rockford region will be motivating for students, and for many of our students the Academy Expo will be a transformative educational experience.”

The Presenting Scholar Sponsor for the Expo is Comcast. The Academy Sponsor is Riverside Community Bank, and the Pathway Sponsor is the Northern Illinois Building Contractors Association or NIBCA.
