We're featuring RPS 205 alumni on the 205 VIBE! We caught up with Guilford High School graduate John M. Alongi, class of 1989. Alongi is a math professor at Northwestern University and lives in Chicago.

Before graduating from Guilford, which other RPS 205 schools did you attend?

Brookview Elementary School and Eisenhower Middle School.

What did you do after graduation?

I earned my bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics at Northwestern University. I work as a Professor of Instruction in the Department of Mathematics at Northwestern University.

How has your time in Rockford Public Schools contributed to your success – whether in your career or life?

As an editor for Valhalla, the Guilford High School yearbook, I refined my writing skills and developed greater self-awareness. Constance Pemble was the faculty adviser for Valhalla, and she continues to be a close friend.

Is there anything else you want to say about your time in RPS 205? Advice for seniors? A teacher, coach or mentor you want to thank?

Throughout middle school and high school I had extraordinary mathematics teachers: Katherine Volkman, Richard Jurgens, William Orr, Margery Orr, Thomas Wallen and James Koehn. I am grateful to all of them.
